Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect and side effects of quetiapine in the treatment of brain organic mental disorders. Methods A total of 74 patients of brain organic mental disorders were randomly assigned to be treatment with quetiapine(n37)or haloperidol(n37)for 4 weeks. The effect was measured by Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale(BPRS) and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS) to evaluate the side effects. Results At the end of the treatments, the scores of BPRS in both treatment groups decreased significantly compared with baseline(P0.01),and the clinical effective rates were 75.5% in quetiapine group and 70.3% in haloperidol group, which was no significant difference between two groups. However, patients in quetiapine group had much fewer side effects than those in haloperidal group, especially in the items of tremor, akathisia, acute dystonia and muscle strain on TESS,in which there was significant difference between two groups((P0.05).)Conclusions Qutiapine has similar efficacy to haloperidol in the treatment of brain organic mental disorders, but it has less side effects.Quetiapine is more applicable to the treatment of brain organic mental disorders.
