Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2(MMP-2) and Ki-67 in pterygium tissues and its clinical significance. Methods The expression of MMP-2 and Ki-67 were determined by immunohistochemistry in 39 cases of primary pterygium and 12 cases of normal conjunctiva. Results The expression of both MMP-2 and Ki-67 in pterygium tissues were significant higher than that in normal conjunctiva(Z=-3.044,Z=-2.707 respectively, both P0.05).Conclusion The high level of MMP-2 and Ki-67 in pterygium sugested that catabolism of basal membrane and cell proliferation were abnormal, which may play an important role in the development of pteryguim.
