Abstract

Objective To evaluate the expression of Ki-67 and VEGF in pterygium. Methods Cryopreserved tissue specimens consisting of normal conjunctiva and pterygium were used to study the expres- sion of Ki-67 and VEGF, using SP immunohistochemistry. Results Expression of Ki-67 was strongly re- vealed mainly in the epithelium of the pterygial specimens, particulary in the head portions. Only expression of VEGF was revealed in the basal cells and endothelial cells of blood vesssel and the fibroblast in the pterygial specimens. Although not in the epithelium of the normal conjunctiva. Conclusions Our findings in this study indicate that the higher expression of Ki-67 and VEGF in the epithelium of the pterygium. The epithelium of the pterygium may exist abnormal regulation of proliferation. The epithelium have acquired transformed and may play an important role in the development of pterygium.
