Clinical analysis of positive Treponema pallidum antibody in elderly patients

Abstract
Objective To investigate the clinical significance of positive anti- Treponema pallidum(TP) antibody in elderly patients.Methods The samples of positive Treponema pallidum antibody from 98 elderly patients were screened by enzyme linked immune adsorption assay(ELISA) before the positive samples underwent Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay(TPHA) and rapid plasma regaining detection diagnostic tests(RPR).All the experimental results were statistically analyzed.Results Among the 98 TP -ELISA positive samples,TPHA was confirmed in 48 cases,the positive coincidence rate being 48.98%.RPR was detected in 44 cases,16 of whom were confirmed positive by TPHA.Conclusions The body of elderly patients has anti- lipid antibodies and anti-TP antibodies.The presence of positive Treponema pallidum antibody cannot be interpreted as hard evidence of infection with syphilis.
