Abstract
Objective:To investigate the change of interleukin 6 (IL 6)in serum of patients with acute cerebral infarction so as to explore the clinical significance. Methods:The serum levels of IL 6 were measured by ELISA in 36 patients with acute cerebral infarction at one, three and seven days after stroke onset and in 32 cases of healthy control. Results:The serum IL 6 levels in the patient group were significantly higher at day one and day three than that in control group( P 0.01).The difference between two groups was not statistically significant at day seven( P 0.05).The increased serum IL 6 levels had significant correlation with the infarct volume and the degree of neurological deficit. Conclusion:IL 6 may have an important role in the diagnosis and prognosis of acute cerebral infarction. It can be used as a prognostic tool to predict the size of the brain damage before it is possible to accurately visualize it with radiological methods.
