Thematic progression and the teaching of English writing

Abstract

The theory of theme and rheme reveals the pattern of the structure of a text by dividing and analyzing theme and rheme in the text.Thematic progression is a very important way to create cohesion of a text.This paper offers an overview of the theme theory of functional grammar,and by analyzing some sample texts,explores how thematic progression works through a text to achieve coherence,and its application in the teaching of writing.
