Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical effect of apical periodontitis treated with single root canal therapy. Methods Eighty-eight teeth diagnosed as apical periodontitis in the department of stomatology of our hospital from August 2009 to July 2010 were selected and randomly divided into single treatment group and multiple treatment group. The multiple treatment group was treated with multiple root canal therapy.Postoperative pain, filling effects and root recovery were compared. Results The patients except 6 cases in single treatment group and 9 cases in multiple treatment group were followed-up 1 week after the treatment. The incidences of postoperative pain in single treatment group and multiple treatment group were 15.91% and 11.36% respectively(P0.05).There were no significant differences in the incidences of appropriate filling, less filling and super filling between the two groups. There was also no significant difference in the effect of the treatment between the two different treatment methods(P0.05).Conclusion The clinical effect of single root canal therapy is similar to that of multiple root canal therapy.
