Effect of cigarette smoking on human sperm DNA integrity and sperm parameters

Abstract
Objective:To explore the effect of cigarette smoking on human sperm DNA integrity and sperm parameters.Methods:The cigarette smoking status of 191 patients with male infertility were surveyed,human sperm DNA integrity was detected by fluorescent staining of acridine orange.Sperm density and motility were detected by computer assisted sperm analysis.Sperm morphology analysis was performed by semiautomated sperm morphology analyzer.Results:Sperm motility of smoker group was significantly lower than that of nonsmoker group(P0.05),the sperm density and morphology were lower than those of nonsmoker group,but without significant difference(P0.05).Abnormal cases of sperm DNA integrity of smoker group was significantly higher than that of nonsmoker group(χ2=5.393,P0.05).Sperm density of abnormal sperm DNA integrity group was significantly lower than that of normal group(P0.05),but there was no difference in sperm motility and morphology between the two groups.Conclusion:Cigarette smoking affects sperm DNA integrity.There is a correlation between sperm DNA integrity and sperm density.Cigarette smoking may affect on sperm parameter by sperm DNA integrity.
