Effect of cigarette smoking on human sperm DNA integrity and sperm parameters

Abstract

Objective To discuss the effect of cigarette smoking on human sperm DNA integrity and sperm parameters. Methods Sperm DNA integrity was evaluated by sperm chromatin dispersion(SCD) and the results were expressed in terms of DNA fragmentation index(DFI).The cigarette smoking status of 200 patients with male infertility were surveyed,sperm parameters and DFI were measured in them. Results There was a statistical difference in the concentration and mobility and forward mobility and DFI of sperm between the smoker group and the nonsmoker group(P0.05). Conclusion Cigarette smoking affects routine semen parameters and sperm DNA integrity.
