The theory holds poerty must break the bonds of the five-character or sevencharacter style and eliminate various restictions imposed on by the traditional poetic theory. One can compose a poem in a style in accordance with its theme without considering the classical meters. On one hand Hu Shi's theory is apparently influenced by the American imagism and the revolution in poetryin late Qing dynasty while,on the other hand,he brought a great impact on the development of modern Chinese poetic theory and new poetry.
