Analysis of Outpatient on the Rationality in the Use of Chinese Patent Medicine in Sichuan Maternal and Child Health Hospital

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the outpatient use of Chinese patent medicines and evaluate its rationality to promote rational use of drug in our hospital.METHODS: A total of 1 200 outpatient prescriptions from October 2012 to September 2013 randomly sampled were subjected to statistical analysis regarding the use of Chinese patent medicines.RESULTS: The rate of outpatients using Chinese patent medicines was as high as 48.75%( 585 /1 200),with more Chinese patent medicines prescriptions for the patients from pediatric department,department of gynecology or department of internal medicine.Irrationality was noted in the outpatient use of Chinese patent medicine which manifested as repeated medication or inappropriate in the choice of drugs or indications etc.CONCLUSION: There is widespread use of Chinese patent medicine.It is urgent to intensify training of physicians and pharmacists on related knowledge to enhance the level of rational use of drugs.
