Analysis of 12 460 Emergency Prescriptions of Chinese Patent Medicine

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the status quo of the utilization of Chinese patent medicine in emergency treatment in Northern Jiangsu Hospital so as to promote rational use of Chinese patent medicine.METHODS: We randomly selected 12 460 emergency prescriptions of Chinese patent medicine from our hospital between May 2009 and April 2012 and analyzed statistically the number of prescriptions,drug use form,dosage form,route of administration,proportion of medicines used in different department,drug categories,distribution of consumption sum and its ranking,proportion of essential drugs and the irrational drug use etc.RESULTS: The use of Chinese patent medicine in emergency patients of our hospital was basically reasonable,yet there were still some problems remains to be solved.CONCLUSION: The Chinese patent medicine is widely used in emergency treatment among clinicians engaged in western medicine in an attempt to improve their diagnose treatment level by employing traditional Chinese medicine theory that determining the treatment based on differentiation of symptoms and signs and combining western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine and promote rational use of Chinese patent medicine in emergency treatment.
