Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis of 9 cases

Purpose:To study the methods of early diagnosis and treatment for xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis(XGP).Methods:A retrospective study of a group patients with XGP seen from 1987～1997 at our hospital was performed. The clinical features, laboratory date and imaging findings were analyzed in combination with published literature.Results:8 patients of this group who underwent nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy showed no relapse in the ipsilateral or contralateral kidney during the follow up period. 1 patient with bilateral XGP was treated with antibiotics and indwelling of double J stent in the pelvis, whose disease remained stable.Conclusions:CT scan and renal biopsy should be used routinely for patients with XGP in order to make early diagnosis.
