Diagnostic Value of Serum Total Bile Acid in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract

Background: Bile acid is synthesized and excreted in liver, therefore it can reflect the hepatocyte injury. Aims: To study the diagnostic value of serum total bile acid (TBA) in patients with liver cirrhosis. Methods: The concentration of TBA was detected in 42 cases of cirrhosis, and compared with other routine liver function tests. Results: The level of TBA in patients with liver cirrhosis was significantly higher than that of healthy group (P0.01), the increasing ratio (6.9) and the abnormality rate (74%) were significantly higher than those of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), r-glutamyl trans-ferase (r-GT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (P0.01). There was significant difference of TBA between the patients with compensated and those with decompensated cirrhosis (P0.01). Conclusions: TBA is a sensitive test to reflect hepatocyte injury in patients with liver cirrhosis.
