Changes of plasma endothelin and calcitonin gene related peptide in patients with congestive heart failure

Abstract

Objective To determine the levels of plasma endothelin(ET) and calcitonin gene related peptide(CGRP) in patients with congestive heart failure(CHF) and their action in development of CHF.Methods The plasma ET and CGRP in 42 patients and 28 healthy controls were measured by radioimmunoassary.Results The level of ET was significantly higher in patients (59.71±17.26) pg/ml than that in controls (50.83±7.50) pg/ml;the plasma CGRP was obviously lower in patients (46.52±12.29) pg/ml than that in controls (56.77±16.06) pg/ml.The increased plasma ET and decreased plasma CGRP were associated with the degree of CHF. Conclusions There are an increased level of plasma ET and a decreased level of plasma CGRP in CHF patients and they are associated with the degree of CHF.ET and CGRP may play an important role in development of CHF.
