Relationship between pulse pressure and homocysteine in old patients with essential hypertension

Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between circulating levels of homocysteine(Hcy)and pulse pressure(PP) in old patients with essential hypertension(EH).Methods A total of 369 old subjects were sampled from out-patients and in-patients.The concentrations of homocysteine,serum triglyceride,LDL cholesterol,HDL cholesterol and glucose were measured.Results A positive relationship was found between PP and Hcy(P0.001).This relationship remained after adjustment for classical EH risk factors.Conclusions Increase in PP is associated with elevated Hcy levels in old patients with EH.Hcy might play an important role in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension.
