Abstract

Objective To investigate the cause and the management of posterior capsular rupture in the phacoemulsification for cataracts. Methods Phacoemulsification and IOL implantation were performed on 1860 eyes of 1535 patients. In this series,Healon was used in the eyes treated. Results Of the 1860 eyes, the posterior capsules of 126 eyes(6.8%) were broken.Among these 126 eyes,109 eyes had nuclei of scale Ⅳ and 25 eyes had nuclei of scale Ⅱ~Ⅲ.84 eyes(66.7%)had during the phase of phaco,34 eyes(27%)in the phase of I/A,5 eyes(4%) in the phase of IOL implantation.Successful CCC were performed in 41 eyes (32.5%).123 IOLs were implanted. Conclusion To decrease the incidence of posterior capsular rupture, the key factors are the successful CCC and the proper score of the nuclear hardness.Skillful technique of the surgeons and the active adjustment of the surgery approach are also very important. In case posterior capsular rupture occurred, the proper management should be performed to reduce the complications.
