Comparison on effect of breast conserving surgery and modified radical operation in treatment of early breast cancer

Objective To compare the effect of breast conserving surgery and modified radical operation in the treatment of early breast cancer. Methods From March 2011 to March 2013, in the Fifth People's Hospital of Longpo District in Chongqing City, the clinical data of 80 patients with early breast cancer admitted to were analyzed retrospectively, according to the different surgical method, the patients were divided into modified radical operation group(42 cases)and breast conserving surgery group(38 cases). The modified radical operation group was taken modified radical operation, the breast conserving surgery group was taken breast conserving surgery. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss and length of the two groups were observed and recorded. The cosmetic result of postoperative breast in breast conserving surgery group was evaluated by breast beauty evaluation criteria. The conditions of postoperative disease free survival, local recurrence, distant metastasis and death were followed up. The postoperative quality of life was evaluated by health questionnaire(SF-36). Results The operation time and length of stay in breast conserving surgery group was significantly shorter than those of modified radical operation group, the intraoperative blood loss was significantly less than that of modified radical operation group(all P 0.05). The excellent and good rate of postoperative beauty in breast conserving surgery group reached to 94.74%. Postoperative follow-up found that the rates of disease free survival, local recurrence, distant metastasis and lose visit/death between the two groups had no statistically significant differences(all P 0.05). The scores of postoperative physiological function, physiological role, body pain, general health,vigour of life, social function, role emotional, mental health and average score of SF-36 in breast conserving surgery group were all significantly higher than those of modified radical operation group(all P 0.05). Conclusion Breast conserving surgery and modified radical operation in the treatment of early breast cancer have similar effects. Compared with modified radical operation, breast conserving surgery can significantly shorten operation time and length of stay,reduce intraoperative blood loss, and the postoperative cosmetic result is good, which can improve the postoperative quality of life and can be as the preferred operation of early breast cancer.
