Application of microsurgery in lateral ventricles meningioma resection

Abstract

【Objective】To explore the operative techniques and curative effect of lateral ventricular meningioma resection using microsurgery. 【Methods】A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 28 cases with lateral ventricular meningioma, who were hospitalized in our hospital and underwent microsurgery from March 2002 to September 2009.【Results】Total resection was performed in 25 of 28 cases and the total resection rate was 89.29% . Postoperative complications, which included codirection hemianopia in 11 cases, hemiplegia in 4, headache and psychic symptom in 8 and ventricular tumor bed hemorrhage in 4, were all cured by no operative therapy. There was no perioperative mortality. Follow up of from 3 months to 5 years was performed in 23 patients and total recovery occurred in 20.3 cases whose tumor recurrence in postoperative 3 years was due to subtotal resection recovered after reoperation. 【Conclusions】Lateral ventricular meningioma resection using microsurgery is a safe and effective approach. Appropriate operative approach and skilled microsurgical techniques is the key to total resection of meningioma and improving curative effect.
