Abstract

Edna Pontellier, the heroine in Kate Chopin's The Awakening was a traditional mother woman, who, at the age of 28, experiences in her life a tremendous awakening which is indicated in her revolt against conventional womanhood and search for selfhood. Mrs. Chopin intends to reveal through Edna's story the predicament and struggle of the women in the patriarchal society.
