Relationship between metabolic syndrome and angiotensin converting enzyme gene insertion/deletion polymorphism in essential hypertensive patients

Abstract

Objective:The purpose of this study was to detect the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in essential hypertensive (EH) patients.Method:Two hundred and two EH patients were observed. Multiple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to evaluate the ACE gene I/D polymorphism. Insulin resistance was evaluated by insulin sensitivity index (ISI).Result:There was not difference of ACE genotype polymorphism between metabolic syndrome group and non MS group in EH patients (χ 2= 2.545, P 0.05). ACE polymorphic genotype is related to waistline and HDL-C(P 0.01), to ratio of waistline and hipline and Triglycerides(P 0.05),but not to blood pressure, serum glucose or insulin(P 0.05). The waistline of ACE gene DD genotype and ID genotype is higher than that of II genotype in MS group of EH patients (P 0.01, P 0.05). The ratio of waistline and hipline and Triglycerides of ACE gene DD genotype are higher than those of II genotype in MS group of EH patients (P 0.05), and HDL-C of DD genotype is lower than that of II genotype of MS group of EH patients(P 0.05), but there was no difference in blood pressure, serum glucose and insulin between different gene types(P 0.05).Conclusion:ACE gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism is not related to the MS of EH patients. But ACE gene polymorphism is related to the obesity and disorder of lipid metabolism of MS, and not to blood pressure level and insulin sensitivity of MS in EH patients.
