Abstract
Objective:To observe the effect of Guanjiekang (composed of Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, etc) on the expressions of IL-1β and TGF-β1 in osteoarthritic cartilage and to explore its possible mechanisms. Methods: Osteoarthritis models of News Zealand rabbits were established via left articular genu injection of papain. Thirty-six rabbits were randomly divided into normal group A, model group B, blank control group C, Guanjiekang group D, celecoxib group E and Zhuanggu Guanjie Pills group F. Two weeks after injected of papain, rabbits in group D, E and F were treated with Guanjiekang, celecoxib and Zhuanggu Guanjie Pills respectively for 4 weeks. Left knees were collected to measure the expressions of IL-1β and TGF-β1 with immunohistochemistry assay. Results:The expression of TGF-β1 significantly increased in Guanjiekang group, while the expression of IL-1β decreased the most in celecoxib group. Conclusion:Guanjiekang might promote the healing of osteoarthritis directly or indirectly via enhancing the expression of TGF-β1 and reducing the expression of IL-1β in cartilage.
