Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of three base metal porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns on the periodontal tissue of the restored teeth, and discuss the relationship between the activity of IL-1β and AST in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and the health of periodontal tissue. Methods 49 maxillary incisors restored with based PFM crowns in 38 patients were selected for the study, including 19 Ni-Cr PFM crowns, 15 Ti-Ni-Cr PFM crowns and 15 Co-Cr PFM crowns. The contralateral homonymy natural healthy teeth served as control. The patients were followed up for 6 months after crown restoration. IL-1β and AST level in GCF were analyzed in the laboratory. Results In all these three PFM groups, the GCF-AST concentrations of the crowned teeth were higher than the controlled teeth, and there was a significant difference. The concentration of IL-1β in GCF in Ni-Cr PFM and Ti-Ni-Cr PFM group were significantly higher than that of the controlled group, but no significant difference was found between the Co-Cr PFM group and the controlled group. Conclusions Ni-Cr PFM and Ti-Ni-Cr PFM crowns have negative influence on periodontal tissue, Co-Cr PFM has few influence on periodontal tissue of the restored teeth.
