Abstract
China’s modern higher education run by an industry went back to the professional colleges created by the advocates of the westernization movement in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republican China. Its existence had its specia historical reasons. Understanding the history of this period enables us to gain insight in to the role and function of higher education run by an industry in our country.
