Detection of Bmi-1 expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix

Abstract

Aim:To explore the expression of Bmi-1 in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix.Methods:The expressions of Bmi-1 protein and mRNA were detected in 84 cases of cervical carcinoma and 20 cases of chronic cervicitis by immunohistochemistry(SP)and in situ hybridization.The relationship between Bmi-1 expression and clinicopathological features of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix was analyzed.Results:The positive expression rates of Bmi-1 protein and mRNA in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix were 71.4% and 58.3%,higher than those in the chronic cervicitis(5.0% and 10.0%),and there was significant difference(χ2=29.394 and 15.100,P0.001).The positive expressions of Bmi protein and mRNA in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix were related with clinical stages,the lymph node metastasis(χ2=18.088,20.000 and 16.622,28.476,P0.001),but not with the carcinoma cell differentiation(P0.05).There was positive correlation between Bmi-1 protein and mRNA expressions(rP=0.305,P=0.003).Conclusion:The overexpression of Bmi-1 protein and mRNA in squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix may be associated with the carcinogenesis and development of the tumor,which might be served as a reliable factor for predicting the biologic behavior of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix.
