A Corpus-based Study of Spatial Metaphor

Abstract

Cognitive linguistics holds that metaphor is a basic cognitive activity in humans' daily life, and that spatial metaphor plays an important role in our cognition and many abstract concepts are constructed through spatial metaphor. The present research is intended to study the metaphorical extension ofhighandlowand explore their cognitive basis by searching them in the British National Corpus. The authentic data in the corpus indicate thathighandloware projected onto five target domains, namely, quantity, state, status, time and sensation.
