Foreignization and Domesticating in Translation

Abstract

There exists a long-lasting controversy in translat ion field,that is,the debate between the strategy of domestication and the str ategy of foreignization.Domestication strategy refers to the target-languageculture-oriented translation in which expressions acceptable in the target lang uage culture are exploited in order to make the translated texts intelligible an d suitable for the target text readers.Foreignization strategy refers to the soure-language-culture-oriented translation which fully reflects the features of original text in order to keep the exotic color.This paper analyzes the roles of domestication and foreignization in translation from the perspective of Equivalence Theory in order to seek new application of them in translation.
