Abstract

Firstly, the author brings up two strategies in cross-cultural translation——domestication and foreignization. Then the difference between domestication/foreignization and literal translation/free translation is pointed out.The focus of literal/free translation is on the linguistic level. However, only when there is a difference on the cultural level, are domestication and foreignization involved.Lastly, authentic translated versions are given to sum up and demonstrate various factors that affect the choice of domestication and foreignization, including translation purpose, text type, target reader and ideology.
