On Modernization of Chinese Culture and Literature by Wang Mingke

Modernization of Chinese Culture and Literature by Wang Mingke has carried out an exploration into the modernization of Chinese culture and literature from the perspective of cultural reflection. After identifying ten weaknesses in discussions about modernization and modernity of Chinese culture, this monograph centers on four cultural phenomena including resistance, construction, reflection and practice with four famous writers as case studies, who are Wuming Shi, Lu Xun, Shen Chongwen and Yang Yi. In the end, it draws a conclusion as follows: the contradiction between tradition and modern has constituted the fundamental one of Chinese culture. Furthermore, the inner structure of tradition and modernity is also full of contradictions. It is in the context of conflicts between multiple cultures that modern writers have made efforts to construct modern Chinese culture at three levels contradictory to each other. This new system is far from being perfect, but it has helped to develop the modernization of Chinese culture.
