Comparison between laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparotomy in elderly patients

Abstract

Objective To compare the clinical values between laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and open cholecystectomy (OC) in elderly patients. Method Patients over 60 years old undergoing cholecystectomy were investigated and were divided into two groups. Group LC (n=120) was performed under laparoscopic procedure, group OC (n=56) under open procedure. Results Compared with the OC group, the mean average operation time, blood lost, the peristaltic sound recovery time and the length of postoperative stay in the LC group were much less (t= 2.36,2.26,2.88,2.47,P 0.05 ). There was no serious postoperative complications and no death in both groups. Conclusions LC is an effective, safe and minimally invasive operation, and it is superior to OC for the old people.
