Abstract
Objective To study the expression and the clinical significance of mucin MUC2 and MUC5AC in ovarian epithelial tumor. Methods Expression of mucin MUC2 and MUC5AC was detected immunohistochemically in 20 cases of benign, 23 borderline and 37 malignant epithelial ovarian tumors. Results The levels of the MUC2 and MUC5AC were higher in malignant mucinous tumors than in the benign and borderline tumors. MUC2 expression was correlated with pathologic grading and clinical staging (P0.05); but MUC5AC expression was unrelated to pathologic grading and clinical staging (P0.05). Conclusions Gastric and intestinal differentiation are early and almost constant events in ovarian mucious tumorigengsis. The expression of MUC2 may be useful in evaluating the prognosis of ovarian carcinoma.
