Abstract

Objective To investigate the changes of left ventricular function with the varied left ventricular geometries owing to essential hypertension (EH).?Methods There were 91 patients with EH and 31 healthy volunteers recruited in the present study. The left ventricular geometry and cardiac function were studied by using two-dimensional echocardiography. According to the relative wall thickness and left ventricular mass index, the left ventricle was classified into 4 patterns, the normal geometry (NG), concentric cardiac remodeling (CCR), concentric cardiac hypertrophy (CCH) and eccentric cardiac hypertrophy (ECH).?Results The systolic function parameters (including EF2d, EPSS, mFS and ESS) were all normal in the patients with NG, CCR and CCH. But in the subgroup of patients with ECH, the parameters, except for mFS, differed markedly from those in the control and other EH patient subgroups (P0.001).?Conclusion The left ventricular systolic function can long be maintained in a compensated state, and is related to left ventricular patterns.
