Abstract

The article discusses the contract awarded to the Consortium to introduce the country's first high-speed rail service running on the Northeast Corridor. The Consortium members will design and manufacture up to 18 trainsets, with each trainset consisting of two power cars and six coaches, and the supply of 15 high-horsepower electric locomotives to be used in Amtrak's Northeast corridor fleet. Additionally, the contract includes turnkey services for the design and construction of three maintenance facilities to support the rolling stock. The schedule calls for high-speed rail service along the corridor to begin by early 1999.
