Abstract

After years of decline of the railroads, plans are afoot to expand, link and upgrade both freight and passenger systems. The article notes that a three-point program to move people from roads to trains, should include the following: the Northeast Corridor electrification between Boston and New Haven, Connecticut; permitting of 3 high-speed proposals in Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania; and the maglev demonstration program. Amtrak is working to restore service dropped since World War II, or upgrading track to increase speed. Examples of such activity are noted.
