Abstract
The CityTunnel project in Malmo, Sweden, involved twin fast-track tunnel boring machine (TBM) bores. It also used a cooperative project management system that kept costs down and encouraged innovative solutions. Disciplined risk management was a key aspect, which caused a sharp focus on production. Serious challenges was the concurrent construction of twin running tunnels, with each earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) having to complete two runs that totaled approximately 4.6 km. Excavation, and segment and cross passage tunneling activities are detailed. The article concludes with additional discussion on risk, production, and project management.
