Abstract

On Feb. 9, 1965, the City of Long Beach opened bids for the right to participate in the development of approximately 86% of the nation's largest undeveloped oil reserve. On April 1, 1965, the Long Beach Unit became effective. Interested parties include the City of Long Beach, the State of California, 15 oil operators, and over 10,000 townlot owners. Two years after the effective date of the Unit, oil production has reached 40,000 bpd from 108 producing wells, while 68,000 bpd of water are being injected into 19 injection wells. All of the required 4 man-made islands of rock and sand are completed and 14 drilling rigs are active on 3 of these islands. Field operations are conducted by the Thums Long Beach Co. under the supervision of the City. Ultimately, the Long Beach Unit should produce in the range of 160,000 to 225,000 bopd from approximately 657 producing wells. Reservoir withdrawal will be balanced by injection into approximately 201 injection wells.
