Abstract

On Feb. 9, 1965 the City of Long Beach opened bids for the right to participate in the development of approximately 86% of the nations's largest undeveloped oil reserve. On April 1, 1965 the Long Beach Unit became effective. One year after the effective date of the Unit, oil production has reached 18,000 bpd from 37 producing wells, while 35,000 bpd of water are being injected into 10 injection wells. Field operations are conducted by the Thums Long Beach Co. under the supervision of the City. Ultimately, the Long Beach Unit should produce in the range of 160,000-200,000 bpd from approximately 703 producing wells. Reservoir withdrawal will be balanced by injection into approximately 225 injection wells. As contractor to the City, THUMS is using Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), with refinements, to bring the Long Beach Unit to maximum production in less than 4 years.
