Legislative and consumer pressure for more efficient and less polluting vehicles is leading manufacturers towards the large scale introduction of diesel engines for motor cars. This article examines the present position and future trends, and indicates the market requirements to be met and the technical problems to be overcome, including design for car applications, injection equipment, timing and governing, and diesel fuel economy in practice.
