Abstract

A brief review is presented of the development of the traffic engineering profession, especially in Australia. Many of the traffic control devices and other traffic engineering measures in current use have a long history and are subject to continual development and refinement as the profession responds to new challenges and takes advantage of new opportunities. The particular aspects discussed in this section include: traffic studies, signing and delineation, traffic signals, traffic law, road safety, road capacity, traffic design, cost effectiveness, transport fuel, comprehensive traffic management, transport planning, and traffic engineering education. For the covering abstract see IRRD 878474.
