THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRAFFIC ENGINEERING IN AUSTRALIA

This history of traffic engineering in Australia notes that some basic traffic engineering principles began to be enunciated in Australia in the late 1930s, and in the 1940s the country began to develop as a separate branch of highway engineering . It was well established in the 1950s, and since the 1960s there have been many significant developments in the theory and practice of traffic engineering, and traffic engineering applications. The article specifically notes the history of traffic studies, signing and delineation, traffic signals, and traffic law. Early efforts in the area of road safety are noted, and the use of the United States' 'Highway Capacity Manual' is discussed. The benefit cost analyses of road proposals, the issue of transport fuel, the application of comprehensive traffic management and transport planning are discussed. The training and education of traffic engineers is also discussed.
