Abstract

THE CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE EMBANKMENTS IN A MOUNTAINOUS ZONE TO SUPPORT HEAVILY TRAFFICKED HIGHWAYS, NECESSITATES THE ASSISTANCE OF GEOLOGISTS AND SOIL MECHANICS SPECIALISTS AT THE START OF THE DESIGN STAGE, DURING THE COURSE OF CONSTRUCTION AND ON OCCASION AFTER THE OPENING OF THE ROUTE. THE SECTION OF THE A8 MOTORWAY BETWEEN ROQUEBRUNE AND THE ITALIAN FRONTIER WITH ITS DIFFICULT TOPOGRAPHY AND COMPLEX GEOLOGY, INCLUDES APPROXIMATELY A DOZEN EMBANKMENTS VARYING IN HEIGHT BETWEEN 20 AND 60 M. THEIR CONSTRUCTION AND THE DISORDERS WHICH OCCURRED IN ONE OF THEM SOME THREE YEARS AFTER THE MOTORWAY WAS OPENED, HAVE MADE IT POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE A PRECISE METHODOLOGY FOR THE DESIGN AND SURVEILLANCE WHICH TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SAFETY OF ROAD USERS AND ADJOINING STRUCTURES.
