NEARLY THE ENTIRE AREA COMPRISING THE RHINE VALLEY MOTORWAY SECTION BETWEEN THE NORTH DORNBIRN MOTORWAY JUNCTION AND THE KLAUS EXIT ROAD IN VORARLBERG, OVERLIES A SUBSOIL WITH A VERY LIMITED BEARING CAPACITY. FOR GEOGRAPHICAL REASONS IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO CONSTRUCT THE MOTORWAY IN AN AREA WITH BETTER SOIL CONDITIONS. THE RHINE FORMS THE FEDERAL BORDER IN THE WEST, A DENSELY POPULATED AREA LYING AT THE FOOT OF THE MOUNTAINS TO THE EAST. ABOVE ALL, SOIL MECHANICS EXPERTS HAD THE TASK OF FINDING AN EFFECTIVE AND ECONOMICALLY VIABLE MEANS OF MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS OF MODERN ROAD CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY UNDER GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES. THE AUTHOR ATTEMPTS TO OUTLINE THE PARTICULAR DIFFICULTIES INHERENT IN THE BUILDING OF STRUCTURES AND THEIR SOLUTIONS. IN ADDITION THE STUDY CONTAINS A REVIEW OF PAST EXPERIENCES AND THEIR USEFUL APPLICATION FROM THE SCIENTIFIC POINT OF VIEW, WITH THE PURPOSE OF APPLYING THESE LEARNED EXPERIENCES TO OTHER SIMILAR CASES. THE STUDY DEALS EXCLUSIVELY WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF STRUCTURES ON PILE FOUNDATIONS AND MORE SPECIFICALLY WITH THE EFFECTS OF THE TRANSFER OF PRESSURE FROM CONNECTED EMBANKMENTS TO THE PILE FOUNDATIONS OF BRIDGES AND SIMILAR OBJECTS.
