Abstract
Pennine Vibropiling installed vibro stone columns to accelerate settlement as part of a contract for the Highways Agency and Heathrow Airport to widen the M25 motorway near Heathrow, UK. The accelerated settlement enabled the ground to support embankments for new slip roads for junction 14. The old slip roads will be used to widen the motorway to up to six lanes in each direction. The London clay embankments are being built to a maximum height of 8.5m and have 1:3 slopes. Challenges facing Pennine included badger setts, height restrictions associated with the take-of and landing paths of aeroplanes, and cabling for the Midas system displaying temporary speed limits during heavy traffic. Stratacaster rigs were used to install the stone columns. Pre-boring was only required for 138 columns out of 10,000. Details are given of the installation process.
