Abstract

This article provides an overview of the importance of traffic engineering research, and traces the creation and development of some of the key traffic research bodies and academic institutions in the U.S. as of the late 1940s. These include the Highway Research Board of the National Research Council, the Eno Foundation, Iowa State University, and the American Automobile Association, among others. Future directions for traffic research and the need to educate the driving public are also discussed.
