Highway safety forum : advancing road transportation safety through better communication and cooperation among the disciplines

Safe travel on our streets and highways has long received ample attention. However, there remains a relatively unexplored area within this subject. This area is communication between the large number of disciplines involved. The Highway Safety Forum was developed to delve into this not fully explored territory. The theme of the Forum was improving interdisciplinary information exchange to enhance highway safety. This document constitutes the proceedings of the Forum which took the form of a workshop in which eight highway safety related disciplines met in small groups to discuss issues relating to improved communication. The following eight disciplines were covered: (1) Emergency medical services; (2) licensing; (3) highway maintenance; (4) law enforcement; (5) human factors; (6) vehicle design; (7) information systems; and (8) highway design. The proceedings contains introductory papers presented by individuals representing each of the disciplines followed by the reports generated by each of the working groups.
