JOINT INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC SAFETY RESEARCH: AN IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD

The Road Transport Research Programme of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) constitutes a multidisciplinary forum of exchange of international research and experience on road infrastructure, traffic safety, traffic and freight transport, road environment, research policy, developing countries' issues and road transport documentation and statistics. For over 25 years now, the reputed publications of the Programme's activities (state-of-the-art and/or research reports by scientific expert groups) and the 'results-oriented' organization of workshops, seminars or conferences by expert committees, have contributed to effectively guiding research investments on focused and practical issues, reflecting both the road transport policy orientations of Member countries and emerging technology developments. This article highlights the most important study findings and recommendations of road safety activities undertaken in the period 1989-1994. The importance of joint international road safety research is emphasized as one of the most efficient means of promoting research findings and developing effective and forward looking remedial measures and programmes.
