Distribution of 168 Shigella strains and results of drug sensitivity test.

Abstract

Objective To understand the distribution of Shigella and their antibiotic resistant characteristics in our hospital. Methods The stool samples of the patients with diarrhea were collected in Gastro-intestinal department of our hospital from June to October 2006. Then the bacteria were isolated, cultured and identified. Meanwhile antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed using K-B method. Results Of the 168 Shigella strains detected, S. sonnei, S. f lexneri , S.boydii. were accounted for 63.7%, 35.1% and 1.2%, and S. dysenteriae was not detected. The resistant rate of Shigella strains to norfloxacin and amoxicillin were 8.3% and 9.5%. The resistant rate to sulfasulfonamides , ampicillin ,ambramycin, nalidixic acid and rifampicin were all over 75% . Conclusion The main serotypes of Shigella spp is S. sonnei. The resistant rate of Shigella strains to norfloxacin and amoxicillin is low.
