Abstract
This paper draws from contemporary research in the psychological literature to argue that transportation engineers and decision makers should consider the issue of perceived risk when developing Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS). These perceptions will influence public acceptance of IVHS technologies and the consequent product market. Current research could be affected in at least two areas: the design standards of IVHS systems and IVHS benefit estimation.
