Abstract

Geotextile wall aids were used in the widening project for the I-295 in New Jersey, in which Bridge 8 was replaced with a new bridge consisting of 10 traffic and 9 shoulder lanes. Excavation for the new abutments required an earth retaining structure to prevent collapse of the approach embankment for the completed half. Geotextile reinforced walls had construction and cost advantages over other alternatives that were considered. The design methodology presented in the FHWA Geotextile Engineering Manual (1985) was used, and the wall was designed with a constant layer thicknes of 1 foot for its entire height. The fabric strength varied from 250 to 600 pounds per linear inch of wall. Details of the construction are described. Quality control tests are also described. These geotextile walls will not be permanent structures. It is estimated that the cost savings from geotextile use is about $55,000.
