Abstract
The article describes how a treated timber retaining wall system that was developed as a lower cost, more attractive alternative for the Sierra foothills, was redesigned using a geogrid. The advantages of this type of timber walls are noted. The feasibility of replacing the 'cribs' with a geogrid or geotextile was studied. The geogrid was chosen over a geotextile primarily because of its higher modulus, less flexiblity, and its ability to meet the required pulled resistance which kept the width of backfill to a minimum. The grid also gave a simple way of fastening to the timbers that was easy to conceal. Details of the design and construction are summarized.
